We spoke to Lynne Hetherington, Scottish salon Revival Retreat's Managing Director for the secrets to her salon's success and for top training tips.
How did you feel about winning the Training Award at the British Beauty & Spa Awards 2008?
This is the third time we have won this award and I am absolutely thrilled to get recognised for the commitment which I and my staff put into training. It was a very touch category with me fighting off leading salon, not only in Scotland but in the whole of the UK.
What training methods do you use and what do you think makes you stand out above other salons and training providers?
I establish training through external training courses provided by my suppliers which keeps the staff motivated and happy they are leaving the salon to learn something new as well as a very intensive internal training and development programme. This starts off with a 12-week induction for new staff members where they are assessed and reviewed regularly through to internal workshops given on a monthly basis to ensure all best practices in the salon are not only adhered to but updated and kept fresh and new for our clients.
What advice would you give learners looking at a career as a beauty therapist?
Know exactly what the job entails and if you decide its what you want then stay focussed and learn as much as possible at college. If possible try and get a a few hours in a salon either before you start a college course or during your studies as this can develop you so much further and quicker.
